Bums beat Lake Erie to snap streak

From staff reports

AVON, Ohio — Traverse City snapped an 11-game road losing streak on Thursday, ending the regular season with a 2-0 win over Lake Erie.

The two teams now turn around for a best-of five series to start the postseason at Lake Erie on Saturday and Sunday. Traverse City will host Game 3 on Tuesday and Game 4 on Wednesday, if necessary. Game 5 is Thursday at Lake Erie on Thursday.

Scott Dunn (15-1) will start the playoff opener on Saturday for the Beach Bums (55-41), while Lake Erie will send out Dave Middendorf (12-7). Dunn went 2-0 against the Crushers this season.

Lake Erie won the division after taking the first two games of the series. The Beach Bums clinched a playoff berth despite losing the series opener on Tuesday.

Ben Rawding (2-0) threw a complete-game two hitter to win Thursday’s game. Rawding struck out nine and walked one.

The Beach Bums didn’t give Rawding much offensive support until late in the game, scoring their runs in the final two innings. Traverse City broke a scoreless tie in the eighth on a solo homer by Sean Gusrang, his eighth of the year. The Beach Bums added an insurance run in the ninth as Jose Vargas singled, moved to third on two wild pitches, then scored on an Andrew Heck single.

Matt Howard, Carlo Testa and Jeremy Banks added the other hits for Traverse City.

Matt Smith (5-6) took the loss for the Crushers in relief of starter Jason Wilson, who was solid over seven innings. Wilson allowed three hits, walked one and struck out seven.

Juan Sanchez and Andrew Davis collected the Crushers’ hits.
