TRAVERSE CITY — In the 11th inning, the Washington Wild Things walked Jose Vargas to load the bases and get to Chase Burch.
Facing a 2-2 count with one out, Burch sent a pitch over the fence for a grand slam that gave the Beach Bums a 4-0 victory at Wuerfel Park.
The win gave Traverse City a one-game lead over Lake Erie in the East Division. Florence is 2.5 games back in third.
Burch’s long ball was one of seven hits for the Beach Bums on a night where runs were impossible to come by.
Traverse City set up the winning set when Scott Woodward and Ryan Still had back-to-back singles. Carlo Testa moved them over on a putout by Washington catcher Mario Mercedes for the first out, and with first base open Vargas was walked to bring up Burch.
Woodward had two hits, including a triple, and Vargas had two hits also, including a double.
Matt Miller (1-4) got the win after working 4 innings and allowing only two hits. He walked two and struck out two. Ben Rawding went the first 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, walking three and fanning four. Chris Squires came out of the bullpen for 2 2/3 innings of action and didn’t allow a hit.
Pat Butler (1-2) took the loss for the Wild Things in 1 2/3 innings. Washington starter Gary Lee was tough for eight innings, holding the Beach Bums to three hits and striking out five. He didn’t give up a hit until Woodward’s two-out triple in the third.
Traverse City (52-38) takes on Joliet (35-53) tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Wuerfel Park in the final home series of the regular season. Jake Sabol (9-5) is scheduled to start for the Beach Bums.
