---- — SCHAUMBURG — Traverse City and Schaumburg came into their three-game series each atop their division.
Not any more.
The Schaumburg Boomers wrapped up a series sweep of Traverse City that tumbled the Beach Bums out of first and behind Lake Erie. Sunday’s 5-3 Boomers win put Schaumburg in command of the West Division with a 3.5-game lead and 15 games remaining.
Ryan Still drove in two runs with a single in the second inning to stake the Bums to an early 2-0 lead that held up until Schaumburg posted a three-run fifth, an inning in which TC manager Gregg Langbehn was ejected.
Chase Burch led off the sixth with a solo home run — his 14th of the season — for Traverse City’s only other score.
Chris Cowell was the only Beach Bums player with more than one hit, going 2 for 2. Still and Burch — who hit fifth, with Carlo Testa in the clean-up spot — each had a hit and a walk.
The Boomers’ Steve McQuail had three hits for the second straight game.
Chris Phelan (6-2) picked up the win, allowing three runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings. Johnny Omahen dropped to 7-8, giving up four runs in five innings and striking out four. Matt Miller kept it close, tossing a hitless final 1.2 innings.
Up next for Traverse City is a three-game series at River City before returning home for a nine-game homestand against Normal, Washington and Joliet — which are each under .500. TC then closes out the regular season with what could be a critical three-game road set at first-place Lake Erie.
