Bums drop opener to Gateway

Gateway never trails in taking 6-3 win

SAUGET, Ill. — Gateway scored a run in the first inning and never trailed on Friday for a 6-3 win over visiting Traverse City.

The win was the first in a three-game weekend series between the two teams, now with identical 7-6 records.

The Grizzlies got a run in the first inning off a John Shelby single and then added another run in the second from Jon Meyers off an error.

Traverse City got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Chris Kay nailed a solo home run. But in the bottom of the inning, Gateway scored four more runs to put it away. Antone DeJesus capped the scoring with a three-run homer.

The Beach Bums got a two-run homer from Jose Vargas in the seventh inning to round out the scoring.

Traverse City only managed five hits on the night and stranded just three base runners.

Jacob Clem took the loss in 5.1 innings of work with five earned runs off seven hits. He fanned four.

Alex Kaminsky moved to 3-0 on the season by going seven innings with four hits allowed. Paul Tremlin threw the final two innings to get his first save of the year.

The teams will play again today at 8:05 p.m. Reid Kelly will throw for the Beach Bums, opposite Jonathan Gonzalez.
