AVON, Ohio — Lake Erie clinched the East Division championship with a 5-1 win Wednesday over the Traverse City Beach Bums.
The Beach Bums wrap up the third seed in the Frontier League playoffs, and will play at Lake Erie to start the postseason Saturday.
In the meantime, the two teams play a fairly meaningless contest today, with neither team having much to gain or lose. The Crushers are locked into the second seed, with Schaumburg owning the top spot.
Florence will face the Boomers in the other opening-round playoff series.
The Crushers will host Games 1 and 2 of the playoff series, with Saturday’s contest beginning at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday starting at 5:05 p.m. Traverse City will host Game 3 at Wuerfel Park on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. and if necessary host Game 4 on Wednesday. Fans can purchase playoff tickets at $10 for chairback seats and $5 for lawn seating.
Traverse City’s lone run came in the fourth inning when Chase Burch doubled and came home on Matt Howard’s groundout. Burch and Howard each had two of Traverse City’s five hits total off four Lake Erie hurlers.
The Crushers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings off Sabol, who gave up five runs in as many innings. Jacob Clem threw three innings of shutout relief.
Mike Devine (6-2, 3.95) will start tonight for Traverse City, while Jason Wilson (4-5, 5.60) takes the mound for the Crushers.
