River City sweeps TC with 11-inning 7-5 victory

TRAVERSE CITY — River City swept Traverse City with an 11-inning 7-5 victory Thursday night.

Marcus Nidiffer’s lead-off home run off Rascals closer Gabe Shaw knotted the game at 5-5 and send the game into extra innings, but in the 11th, River City scored on a Johnny Morales RBI double and Phil Winderlich’s RBI single. The RBI was Wunderlich’s third of the day, moving him into a tie for second in the league at 36, trailing only TC’s Chase Burch (39).

Despite the sweep, the Beach Bums (25-17) remain in an East Division first-place tie with Florence.

The Rascals — who used seven pitchers — scored three runs runs total in the first and third innings on a Wunderlich sacrifice fly, a Danny Canela solo shot and a Wunderlich RBI single.

Traverse City surged into the lead with a four-run fourth as Taylor Wrenn led off with a double and came across on Jose Vargas’ seventh home run of the season. Zach Kometani’s RBI double and Sean Gusrang’s run-scoring single put TC atop 4-3.

Will Block’s two-run single in the eighth put Windy City up 5-4.

The Beach Bums had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but River City pitchers struck out the next two batters to avoid coughing up the lead. The Rascals had runners on first and second with one out in the 10th before Burny Mitchem worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a grounder back to the mound.

Vargas, Burch and Matt Howard had two hits each for TC, which goes on the road for three games at Windy City.
