TRAVERSE CITY — River City handed Traverse City a 3-2 setback Wednesday that dropped the Beach Bums from first place in the East Division.
Rascals closer Gabe Shaw struck out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth, with Marcus Nidiffer reaching base on an error to give the Bums the potential game-tying run aboard.
TC’s Johnny Omahen (2-4) had a quality start, going six innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out four. Nick Capito worked two scoreless innings in relief, and Burny Mitchem one.
Justin Sarratt picked up the win for River City, lasting five innings and giving up one run despite giving up four hits and three walks.
Traverse City pulled even at 1-1 in the fourth on Sean Gusrang’s RBI double that scored Zach Kometani. River City took the lead back with consecutive doubles by Curran Redal and Danny Canela to start the fifth.
Taylor Wrenn doubled in the eighth and came home on a Kometani RBI single.
Kometani and Wrenn had two hits each for Traverse City (25-16), which drops a half game behind Florence.
The parents of Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander were on hand at the game, signing autographs of their new book.
Today’s series finale features a flyover from a B-17 Flying Fortress prior to the game and fireworks following the contest.
