Bums select two players in Frontier League draft

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums selected right-handed pitcher Tanner Tripp and second baseman Spiker Helms in the 2014 Frontier League Draft.

Tripp was selected 12th overall in the 14-team draft and comes to the Beach Bums after playing last year for the Peoria Explorers in the Freedom Pro Baseball League. Including playoffs, Tripp made seven starts and compiled a 5-1 record to go along with 4.89 ERA.

Beach Bums manager Dan Rohn said Tripp will compete for a spot in the starting rotation.

The 23-year-old played in the league after graduating from NAIA Arizona Christian University in 2013. In one season with the Firestorm, he posted a 4-3 record with a 3.14 ERA in 14 games (eight starts). Tripp transferred to Arizona Christian after playing one year at Utah, where he made 10 appearances and had an 8.38 ERA.

Tripp started his college career at South Mountain Community College and received first-team All-Region and All-Conference honors as a sophomore in 2011. Tripp was 12-1 with a 1.11 ERA in 15 games (13 starts), striking out 56 compared to just 19 walks in 97.2 innings. He led the conference in ERA and ranked second in the NJCAA in wins, setting a school record in the process.

Helms, a 24-year-old infielder who can also play in the outfield, was a standout at Missouri State during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, where he hit a combined .286 with 86 walks, 70 RBIs, 84 runs, 29 doubles, 15 steals and seven home runs.

He played part of a season with Kansas City of the American Association, where he hit .268 with three homers, three steals, 12 RBIs and 16 runs in 34 games. Last year, he saw action in 32 games with the Frontier League’s Gateway Grizzlies, hitting .170 with two RBIs in 47 at-bats.
