---- — NORMAl, Ill. — For the third consecutive night here, the Traverse City Beach Bums used some late game heroics to beat the Normal CornBelters.
The Beach Bums scored two runs in the ninth inning to battle back for a 5-3 Frontier League win Thursday night.
Jose Vargas doubled in Ryan Still, who had walked and moved to second on a sacrifice by Brian Heere, for the winning run. Jeff Flagg then singled in Vargas for an insurance tally — and a three-game sweep.
The Beach Bums trailed 3-1 when Chase Burch tied it with a two-run homer to left in the fifth. It was his 14th of the season. Burch also drove in Traverse City's first run with a RBI single in the first.
Scott Mueller pitched 2.1 shutout innings in relief for the win. He allowed just one hit. Matt Miller came in with a runner on and one out in the ninth and got Bobby Rinard to hit into a double play.
The Beach Bums are now 58-29, setting a franchise record for wins. Their magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now down to one game.
Traverse City opens a three-game series at Lake Erie, starting tonight.
