EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Johnny Omahen threw a gem for Traverse City.
It just happened to be on a night when the Beach Bums faces Matt Zielinski, who was even better.
Omahen’s six-hitter over seven innings was bested by Zielinski’s eight-inning, two-hit effort as the Evansville Otters salvaged the final contest of a three-game set 1-0.
Zielinski’s nine strikeouts were his second-best effort of the season. He fanned 15 in a complete-game, one-hit shutout of Florence in June. Eric Massingham gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth for his 10th save of the season.
Traverse City’s only hits came from Scott Woodward, Jose Vargas and Carlo Testa.
Shortstop Andrew Cohn — who is hitting .300 — returned for the first time since July 14 and was 0 for 3.
The game’s only run came in the fifth when Jordan Tripp doubled and came in on a Josh Nestor RBI single.
The Beach Bums (35-22) threatened in the eighth — the only time a TC player reached second base. Testa singled, but was picked off. Jeremy Banks reached on a dropped third strike, and pinch runner Matt Howard advanced to second on a Marcus Nidiffer walk.
Omahen gave up six hits and one walk in seven frames and struck out three. Nick Capito came on for a hitless inning.
Traverse City heads to Rockford today for a three-game series with the last-place Aviators (19-37). After that set, the Beach Bums return home for three-game series against second-place Florence and the Frontier Greys.
