TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums were limited to four hits Saturday night.
Fortunately for manager Gregg Langbehn’s club, two were extra base-hits that drove in three runs as the Beach Bums defeated Windy City 3-1 to even their three-game Frontier League series.
Carlo Testa delivered a two-run double in the first while Matt Howard belted a solo home run in the fifth to account for all of Traverse City’s scoring. Both hits came with two outs. It was Howard’s first home run of the season.
Jake Sabol pitched five innings, allowing a run on four hits, to earn his seventh win. Kyle Teague and Matt Miller each tossed two shutout innings of relief to preserve the win. Miller earned the save.
The Beach Bums struck for two runs in the first to take the early lead. With two out, Jose Vargas singled and Chase Burch walked. Both scored on Testa’s double to right.
Windy City lit up the board in the fifth when, with two out, Chase Tucker and Jauce Ray walked and Mike Torres followed with an RBI single.
Traverse City got that run back in the bottom of the fifth on Howard’s home run.
Teague had to pitch out of trouble in the seventh. After retiring the first two batters, he walked Tucker, allowed a single to Ray and then walked Torres to load the bases. But he retired Zach Aakhus to end the threat.
Matt Wickswat went the distance in suffering the loss for Windy City.
The series concludes this evening with Jacob Clem pitching for Traverse City, Daniel Cropper for Windy City.
