Dunn sets league record in Bums' win

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Scott Dunn pitched seven shutout innings Friday night to become the first pitcher in Frontier League history to start 10-0 as the Traverse City Beach Bums beat the Schaumburg Boomers 4-0.

Three other pitchers had started 9-0 previously.

For Dunn, it was the seventh time in 11 starts that he's gone at least six innings while surrendering two runs or less.

But he was not the only star Friday.

Carlo Testa belted two home runs, driving in three, to spark the offense. Testa hit a solo shot in the second and a two-rum bomb in the ninth.

Then, there's relief pitcher, Nick Capito, who pitched himself into a jam in the eighth inning, then pitched himself out.

Capito, trying to preserve a 1-0 lead at the time, loaded the bases with no outs, but he retired the side without allowing a run.

The Beach Bums scored three in the ninth to put the game away.

Traverse City leads the East Division at 30-19.

Dunn allowed just four hits in his seven winnings of work. He walked three and struck out three in lowering his ERA to 1.98.

Capito, who earned his seventh save, had a shaky start. He surrendered singles to Ryan Brockett and Chad Mozingo to open the inning. He then walked Gerard Hall to load the bases, bringing up clean-up hitter Steve McQuail. The left-hander deftly pitched out of trouble, though, striking out McQuail and getting Frank Pfister to ground into a double play.

The Beach Bums took some of the pressure off in the top of the ninth with three runs, two on Testa's homer.

Traverse City finished with seven hits. Testa was the only one with two. Scott Woodward and Andrew Cohn, who missed several weeks with injuries, returned to the lineup. Each had a hit. Woodward was on base three times.

The series resumes tonight with Jake Sabol (6-4, 2.44) getting the start for Traverse City, Cody Griebling (4-4, 5.27) for the Boomers.
