Bums win in 6 innings

Sauget, Ill. — The Traverse City Beach Bums had their game with Gateway delayed, then cancelled in the sixth inning as weather shut down action in a shortened 3-0 Beach Bums victory Friday at GCS Ballpark.

The teams were called off the field while Traverse City was batting in the top of the inning and the game later became official because of storms that were passing through the area.

Prior to that the Bums (7-6) were getting another stellar outing from Jake Sabol, who pitched five innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts for his third win in as many starts.

Andrew Cohn slugged a two-run homer in the fifth and Sean Gusrang had an RBI single in the fourth to account for all the Beach Bums’ runs. Cohn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Traverse City offense. Taylor Wrenn and Marcus Nidiffer also collected hits.

Sabol had retired 10 straight hitters before the game was stopped. The only hit he allowed was a two-out single by Vladimir Frias in the second inning. Only one other Gateway batter reached base, on a walk.

Gregg Downing started and took the loss for Gateway (8-4). He allowed five hits and walked six in 5.2 innings.

The two teams will attempt to get back on the field today at 7:05. Mike Devine will get his first start for the Beach Bums after two appearances in relief. Tucker Jensen (1-0) will start for the Grizzlies.
