SAUGET, Ill. — Through nine games, Traverse City hadn’t hit a home run.
That all changed Tuesday, as the Beach Bums broke out the bats in a 14-4 win over Southern Illinois.
Traverse City (6-4) got home runs from Jose Vargas, who hit a two-run shot in the three-run first inning, and Chase Burch, who launched a three-run shot for a 7-0 lead just two frames into the series-opening contest.
In all, the Beach Bums scored nine runs in the first three innings off Southern Illinois starter Hayden Simpson.
Burch and Andrew Cohn each had three hits to lead Traverse City and drove in a combined five runs. Taylor Wrenn and Ryan Still added two hits apiece. Eight different Traverse City players drove in runs and the Beach Bums collected eight extra-base hits in the rout.
Jacob Clem (1-2) won his first game of the year, going seven innings, while scattering nine hits and walking one.
Southern Illinois (4-6) trailed 14-1 in the eighth when the Miners plated three runs off Chris Squires.
