Rerun: Bums come back again

TRAVERSE CITY — For the third straight game the Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from a deficit to defeat the Rockford Aviators, plating two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 2-1 on Sunday at Wuerfel Park.

Taylor Wrenn's two-out single scored Chase Burch and Sean Gusrang to give Traverse City all the runs it needed to finish the sweep of the three-game series with Rockford.

Garrett Granitz (0-2), who took the loss, came on in the ninth to try and shut the door on the Beach Bums, but Traverse City collected three hits and took advantage of a fielding error in their rally.

Jose Vargas started the inning when he reached on an error by Rockford shortstop Ray Hernandez. Singles by Burch and Gusrang loaded the bases with nobody out, but Granitz got Chris Cowell to hit into a double play, with Vargas being forced out at the plate and Cowell thrown out before he got to first. Before Granitz could get out of the jam however, Wrenn knocked a single that plated his two teammates.

It was the second consecutive 2-1 win for Traverse City, which entered the ninth inning of Saturday's game trailing 1-0. Similarly, the Beach Bums had to overcome a 3-0 deficit in Friday's series opener, scoring four times in the seventh inning to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The three-game winning streak pulled Traverse City (5-4) into a four-way tie for first in the Frontier League's East Division.

Traverse City pitcher Jake Sabol improved to 2-0 on the year with a complete-game gem that included four strikeouts. He scattered three hits.

Rockford's lone run came in the seventh inning as Alvaro Ramirez singled and scored two batters later on a double by Matt Greener.

Josh Schneider started for Rockford and kept the Beach Bums off-balance throughout most of his 7.1 innings. Schneider gave up three hits, walked two and struck out eight.

Gusrang went 2-for-4 to lead Traverse City's offense. Ryan Still and Vargas had the other hits for the Beach Bums. Ted Obregon had the only other hit for the Aviators (1-8), who have dropped seven straight.

Traverse City returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Southern Illinois (4-5). Jacob Clem (0-2) will take the mound for the Beach Bums and Brian Oliver (1-1) will start for the Miners.
