EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A case of the Mondays wasn’t so bad for Traverse City.
Playing their first Monday game of the season, the Traverse City Beach Bums pounded out 17 hits and 12 runs in a 12-5 victory over the Evansville Otters.
The Beach Bums scored all their runs in two innings, exploding for a nine-run fifth.
Trailing 3-0, Traverse City strung together seven hits and two walks in the fifth to cross the plate nine times. Taylor Wrenn blasted a three-run homer and Zach Kometani had one of the two-run variety, while Sean Gusrang added a two-run double and Scott Woodward and Carlo Testa also drove in runs.
In the eighth, Marcus Nidiffer padded the lead with a two-run shot and Wrenn drove in his fourth run of the night with a two-out RBI double that culminated a 12-pitch at-bat that he extended by fouling off seven pitches.
The Otters scored single runs in the second through fifth innings off Mike Devine (4-1). Chris Squires came on to allow only one hit in three innings, striking out four.
Five Bums players had multi-hit games, led by Kometani’s 4 for 5 night with two RBIs and three runs scored. Woodward, Wrenn, Chase Burch and Gusrang had two hits each, while Nidiffer and Howard each had one hit and a walk.
The win was the first of four straight Monday contests for Traverse City.
Scott Dunn (10-0) puts his undefeated record on the line in tonight’s second game of the series.
