Beach Bums win on Rhodes' walk-off hit

TRAVERSE CITY — Jake Rhodes made a costly gaffe in the ninth inning.

He made up for it in the 11th.

Rhodes allowed a passed ball that scored the game-tying run in the ninth, but he came through with a game-winning double with two outs in the 11th as the Beach Bums defeated Windy City 2-1 on Friday at Wuerfel Park.

Rhodes' hit scored pinch runner Kevin Taylor from second to give Traverse City the victory in the opener of a three-game series.

The game went to extra innings when, with one out in the inning, Andrew Brauer scored from third on a passed ball. Brauer reached base on a dropped third strike, then advanced around the bases with two steals.

Chuck Ghysels (1-0) got the win for Traverse City. Ghysels, the fourth pitcher used by Traverse City, pitched two innings, allowing no hits, walking one and striking out three. Casey Delgado started for Traverse City and pitched seven shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out four.

Traverse City (16-27) scored its first run in the sixth as Jeff DeBlieux broke a scoreless game with a solo home run. It was one of the few times Traverse City was able to touch Windy City starter Jake Fisher, who scattered five hits in seven innings and struck out 11. DeBlieux, Rhodes and Josh Miller each had two hits for the Beach Bums.

The two teams are back in action at 7 p.m. tonight. Ian MacDougall (1-2) will start for Traverse City.
