TRAVERSE CITY — One run was all Casey Delgado and the Beach Bums bullpen needed.
Delgado pitched one-hit ball through seven innings, then Will Rankin and D.J. Johnson pitched outs of jams in the eighth and ninth innings, as Traverse City pulled out a much-needed 1-0 Frontier League win over Lake Erie on Sunday evening at Wuerfel Park.
The Crushers were seeking a three-game sweep.
Delgado, pitching on three days of rest, prevented that with a stifling performance to improve to 5-1. The righthander retired the first 19 batters he faced, taking a perfect game into the seventh. He walked one and struck out six.
The Beach Bums, who scored just two runs in the series, took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Jake Rhodes. That drove in lead-off batter Jeff DeBlieux, who reached base after he was hit by a pitch. Rob Benedict sacrificed DeBlieux to second.
That was all the scoring, although the Beach Bums had at least one baserunner in every inning. They stranded 11. Rhodes and Jovan Rosa led an eight-hit attack with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader, the Beach Bums scored a run in the first only to see the Crushers rally late for a 2-1 win. Lake Erie threatened late in this one, too, putting two on with one out in the eighth and ninth innings. In the ninth, with runners on the corners, Johnson forced a pop up and fly out to pick up his ninth save of the season.
The Beach Bums now hit the road for six games, starting with a rare Tuesday morning game at Washington. Zac Fuesser (2-1, 1.30) will get the call for Washington in the 10:35 a.m. contest. Traverse City will start Ian MacDougall (1-1, 2.49).
