O’FALLON, Mo. — When it was needed most, Traverse City’s bullpen could not hold off River City.
The Rascals scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth as they rallied past the Beach Bums for a 9-8 win on Friday.
River City (15-9) scored its two runs in the eighth off Traverse City reliever Chuck Gysels and the game-winning run in the ninth off Chris Bossenbery.
Control issues again plagued Traverse City’s relievers as they walked six batters in the last two innings. One of those resulted in the winning run.
Bossenbery, who came on in the ninth to replace Nate O’Bryan, started the inning by walking Bryan Aanderud. After Taylor Ard’s single put runners at first and third, Aanderud scored on a wild pitch.
Traverse City came back from a 6-2 deficit in the third inning by scoring runs in three straight innings between the fourth and sixth innings, including a three-run sixth that put Traverse City ahead 8-6. Jeff DeBlieux had an RBI double and Jovan Rosa collected an RBI single for the big hits in the sixth. Rosa went 3 for 5 for the Beach Bums. Yazy Arbelo slugged two home runs with a pair of solo shots. Traverse City’s other big hits came on a home run by Taylor Wrenn and a double by Kevin Taylor, who was 2 for 4. Jake Rhodes also went 2 for 4 for the Beach Bums (11-14).
