Bums beat Normal in 11 innings

Traverse City Record-Eagle

NORMAL, Ill. — The Normal CornBelters intentionally walked Jose Vargas to get to Chase Burch.

They probably won’t make that mistake again.

Burch hit a one-out, three-run home run in the 11th inning to give Traverse City a 6-4 victory over Normal and take two of three in the road series. The Beach Bums — who have won 10 of their last 11 — return home for a nine-game home stand starting Tuesday and continuing through July 4.

Ryan Still walked in the 11th and moved to second on a Taylor Wrenn groundout. The CornBelters walked Vargas — who had hit a two-run shot in the ninth to send the game into extra innings — to set up a double play, but Burch didn’t oblige.

Normal threatened in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on a Santiago Chirino RBI single and had runners on first and second with one out before Pat McKenna lined into a double play to end the game.

Keoni Manago had put Normal up 1-0 with a second-inning RBI double. Traverse City evened up the score in the fifth when Burch came across on a wild pitch.

Mike Schwartz and Santiago Chirino had RBI singles in the seventh, putting the CornBelters up 3-1.

Matt Miller earned the save, tossing the 11th frame. Nick Capito threw three one-hit innings to keep it going.

TC starter Jacob Clem had a quality start, giving up two runs, four hits and one walk in six innings, while striking out four.

Normal’s Ryan Demmin struck out eight in eight innings and reliever Alan Oaks fanned six in three frames as 14 Beach Bums batters whiffed on the night.
