TRAVERSE CITY —

Beach Bums sign catcher Higgs

The Traverse City Beach Bums signed catcher Travis Higgs, adding an offensive threat to that position's competition.

Higgs signed last season with the Seattle Mariners and hit .300 with 10 doubles, a homer and 10 RBI in 70 at-bats for the Arizona League Mariners.

A native of Antioch, Calif., Higgs was inked by the Mariners following his senior year at the University of San Francisco, where he was named First Team All-West Coast Conference and helped to lead the Dons to the NCAA tournament. Higgs had a hit in all three of USF's NCAA Tournament Regional games.

In his final year with USF, he hit .289 with 19 doubles, tied for the team lead with four home runs and had 27 RBI. The 19 doubles marked the sixth-highest single season total in Dons history.

Higgs joins catchers Chris Kay and Kip Masuda on the Beach Bums' roster.
