Beach Bums split with Rockford

Sevens are supposed to be lucky.

For the Traverse City Beach Bums, one was and one wasn't.

In a doubleheader of seven-inning games, the Beach Bums split with last-place Rockford.

TC won the nightcap 9-6 after dropping the opener 10-6.

The Beach Bums trail Lake Erie by a half game with four to go in the chase for the last Frontier League playoff spot.

GAME TWO: Matt Brown hit his first home run of the season in a three-run fifth inning. Jose Vargas hit a two-run shot, and five pitches later, Brown left the yard as well.

Brown's sixth-inning infield single brought in Vargas for a 9-5 lead. J.T. Hall had hit a solo home run earlier in the frame.

Scott Mueller came on in the eighth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Michael Hur to end the inning.

Traverse City started swinging right out of the games, scoring three runs in the first inning.

Chase Burch scored when Vargas reached base on a pitchers' error. Hall and Vargas came across on a single by Brown.

Brown drove in Hall again in the fourth inning.

GAME ONE: Bryan Banes didn't make it out of the first inning, giving up four hits and two walks while recording only one out to start off a 10-6 setback.

Banes was charged with all five runs the RiverHawks scored in the frame.

Don Pugliese came on for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief work before Jeff Cinadr was tagged for three runs in the fifth inning.

Stephen Shults and Burch each blasted home rund in the third inning for TC. Burch's shot brought in two runs.

Shults added a two-run shot of his own in the fourth to bring in Brown. The two homers were his third and fourth in 13 games with the Bums.

Chris Kay hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his first of the season.
