Beach Bums get offense going

From Staff Reports

TRAVERSE CITY — The offense came through early and often for Traverse City Sunday in a 10-3 win over Southern Illinois at Wuerfel Park.

The Miners had taken the first two games of the weekend series, but the Beach Bums moved back to three games up in the East Division with Sunday's win.

Jose Vargas got things going in the first inning with a two-run home run. Two batters later, Jeff Flagg connected on a solo shot for a 3-0 lead.

Flagg would add a two-run homer in the sixth inning to complete the scoring for Traverse City.

Chase Burch had two doubles, a single, three RBIs and a run scored while Kyle Colligan also had three hits. Vargas and Flagg both finished with three RBIs.

Jacob Clem got the win for the Beach Bums and hasn't dropped a decision in more than a month. He went 6.1 innings with three hits, two earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Matt Miller was perfect the rest of the way in relief.

Of Southern Illinois' three hits on the night, two were doubles.

Traverse City is off today before heading to Evansville for a three-game series.
