Beach Bums beat London 10-7

LONDON, Ont. — Traverse City’s first appearance at LaBatt Park was a memorable one.

The Beach Bums scored eight runs in the first four innings in a 10-7 victory over the London Rippers in TC’s first foray across the border this season.

Ryan Still doubled in Kyle Eveland in the fourth, and Jose Vargas brought in Brian Heere with a sacrifice fly. Sean Gusrang doubled in Kyle Colligan in the eighth for an insurance run.

Jose Vargas kept up his torrid hitting streak, blasting his 17th home run of the season and 10th in the last 10 games with a two-run shot in the third that brought in Still. Sean Gusrang blasted a two-run shot of his later in the frame, bringing in Jeff Flagg.

Chase Burch doubled in Heere and Vargas in the first.

TC’s offensive explosion bailed out starter Corey Bakey, who gave up five runs (four earned) in two innings. Jason Mattila surrendered two more in an inning before David Deminsky came on to notch his second victory of the season in relief (and fifth overall) with three scoreless innings. Sam Brown tossed a pair of scoreless frames, while Matt Miller finished it off with a near-perfect inning for his third save of the season.

The Bums victimized Matt Schimpf for eight runs in three innings, chasing him in the fourth before he was able to get an out.

NOTES: Florence third baseman Chris Curley was signed by the Chicago White Sox, which could hand the starting third base job to Vargas in next week’s All-Star Game. Curley was voted in as the starter at that position.
