Boomers take series

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Traverse City had a late rally, but it wasn’t enough.

Schaumburg held on for an 8-4 win over the Beach Bums on Monday, taking the three-game series and closing the gap between the two division-leading teams.

Traverse City (28-14) still has a one-game advantage on the Boomers.

In Monday’s game, Schaumburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Sean Mahley scored on an error.

The Beach Bums tied it in the top of the second inning when Kyle Colligan scored on a Marcus Nidiffer RBI double.

In the sixth inning, Schaumburg broke free for four runs — on a triple, a wild pitch, an error and a single — for a 5-1 lead. The Boomers added three more runs in the eighth inning  — on a wild pitch and a two-run double from Frank Pfister — for an 8-1 lead.

Traverse City scored three in the ninth inning, but couldn’t get any closer. Ryan Still drew a bases-loaded walk to score Matt Howard, Jose Vargas drove in Nidiffer and Kyle Eveland scored on a Chase Burch sacrifice.

Still, Colligan, Vargas and Nidiffer each had two hits for Traverse City while Colligan added two stolen bases.

Jacob Clem took the loss in 5.2 innings of work with four earned runs on eight hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Cameron Roth got the win for the Boomers in 6.2 innings with seven hits, one earned run, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Traverse City heads home for a three-game series with Normal beginning today.
