Thunderbolts avoid sweep

Beach Bums settle for taking 2 of 3

From staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY — Windy City waited until almost the last inning to stave off a sweep at the hands of the Traverse City Beach Bums.

With the game tied 4-4, the Thunderbolts scored two runs in the eighth inning on a Matt Grosso double to take a 6-4 victory at Wuerfel Park after Traverse City had won the first two games of the series.

In his third game with the Bums, Jon Hurst hit his first home run, tying the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning.

Jeff Flagg hit his league-leading fifth — and second in as many days — in the sixth.

Chase Burch drove in Brian Heere with a fielder's choice in the third.

Reid Kelly started and gave up four runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out four and walked one.

Matt Miller took the loss, giving up the eighth-inning double in his only frame of work. Nick Capito and Scott Dunn each threw scoreless frames in relief.

The entire league has today off. Traverse City resumes play Tuesday at River City, with David Deminsky taking the mound.
