---- — SAUGET, Ill. — Southern Illinois did all of its scoring in one inning in a 6-4 Frontier League victory Wednesday over Traverse City.
The game was also the first missed by Beach Bums third baseman Jose Vargas since Sept 19, 2010. Vargas was hurt during a swing in the second inning Tuesday and is day-to-day.
Traverse City had just gone up 4-0 on a Marcus Nidiffer fourth-inning solo home run when the Miners feasted on Johnny Omahen, who had gone through the Southern Illinois lineup with three straight 1-2-3 innings. By the time the fourth was over, the Miners had a 6-4 lead — and neither team would score again.
Chase Burch singled in Scott Woodward in the first inning, Zach Kometani and Taylor Wrenn crossed the plate in the second when Wrenn’s single to left field that was misplayed by Carlos Colmenares and turned a single into an error-aided round-tripper. Nidiffer homered in the fourth off Miners starter Brian Oliver, who rebounded to last seven innings.
Omahen gave up five runs in three innings of work, striking out four. Jason Matilla surrendered on in two frames, and Nick Capito and Matt Miller finished it off with three scoreless innings.
