Beach Bums sign former MSU shortstop

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums may have found their starting shortstop.

One of the few positions left that the team was seeking to plug a hole, the Beach Bums signed former Michigan State All-Big Ten shortstop Jon Roof, who was an eighth-round selection by the Texas Rangers in the 2010 draft and has two years of minor-league ball under his belt.

After a two-year career for the Spartans in which he hit .299 with five home runs and 70 RBIs in 107 games, Roof made three stops in the minors for Texas. His longest was a 79-game stretch with Class A Hickory in 2011, where he hit .275 with 38 RBIs in 79 games.
