Northern Notes: Beach Bums honor volunteers

By STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

Megan McGlynn, from the Michigan Department of Human Services Grand Traverse-Leelanau, wrote on behalf of the Northwest Michigan Association of Volunteer Administrators, to thank John and Leslie Wuerfel, the players and the entire staff of the Traverse City Beach Bums who helped the organization recognize more than 2,000 volunteers at a recent Beach Bums game.

"This was the second year we attended a game as our thanks to all the volunteers in our community who give their time selflessly to serve others in a variety of capacities," McGlynn wrote. "The volunteers had a ball ... no pun intended!"

The Ellsworth Front Porch Community Cafe Board and Volunteers would like to extend many, many thanks to the nearly 200 people who visited during their recent open house.

"We heard over and over how enthusiastic folks are to have this 'not-for-profit' restaurant in Ellsworth," the group stated

The Front Porch Community Cafe is a faith-based ministry to provide affordable, home-cooked breakfasts and lunches six days a week using locally grown and produced foods as a key part of the goal to help the local economy.

"At the heart and soul of this project are volunteers," the letter continued. "We are humbled by the dedication of all who stepped forward to get the restaurant sparkling for the open house, the people who planned and helped with the menu, and the ones who donated time or food or expertise to be sure the open house would be a great event. During the open house, we had diners wall to wall, volunteers keeping the food coming and clearing the tables -- in short, doing anything needed to help."

The group went on to say that they welcome bids from local growers so they can use their produce and products and they also welcome financial support from anyone willing to help. The donations are tax-deductible and will be used to meet the goals of good affordable food for all. In addition, funding is needed to purchase the building and the organization says they are very thankful at how accommodating and flexible the owner has been with the ministry.

"Soon we must make some important repairs and updates to the restaurant in order for it to be fully functional and energy efficient," the group wrote. "We have faith that people will help us make this a vital part of our northern Michigan community."
