Late Bums: Nathanson blanks the Rascals

He throws a complete-game shutout in win

FROM STAFF REPORTS

TRAVERSE CITY -- David Nathanson threw his first career complete-game shutout as the Traverse City Beach Bums blanked River City 6-0 Saturday night.

Nathanson limited the Rascals to just four hits and struck out four in nine innings to improve his record to 6-9 on the season.

River City came into the game with the second-best team batting average in the Frontier League, collectively hitting .280.

Nathanson is 5-2 since the All-Star break, with three of his four complete games in that span. His last three appearances have gone into the ninth.

The Beach Bums' bats have also come alive on this road trip, a place where TC had struggled mightily at times this season. The Beach Bums have 65 hits in their first five games of the road trip with a 3-2 record. The road trip continues Tuesday with a three-game set with Kalamazoo.

Andrew Franco drove in the game's first run on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to score Michael Campbell.

John Alonso -- who came into the game hitting .556 in his last 10 games -- singled in the sixth to plate Brad Miller and Campbell.

Brandon McArthur doubled and scored on a Mike Epping single in the seventh. Miller then followed with an RBI single to bring in Epping.

Robby Alcombrack doubled in Brian Lapin in the eighth.

Offensively, the Beach Bums finished with 14 hits. Miller and Alonso had three each while Campbell, Lapin and McArthur rang up two apiece.
