TRAVERSE CITY -- David Nathanson won his Frontier League-leading eighth game as the Traverse City Beach Bums blanked the Midwest Sliders 3-0 on Friday.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for Traverse City (24-19).
Nathanson (8-1) scattered six hits over the first seven innings for Traverse City. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four. Ted Gjeldum struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth inning and Jeff Williams worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.
As sharp as Nathanson was, Mark Suchowiecki matched it early on for the Sliders (14-28).
After the Beach Bums were held scoreless in the first three innings, TC broke through for a run in the fourth on a one-out home run down the left-field line by Kyle Manus. The homer was the sixth of the season for Maunus.
TC picked up its other two runs in the eighth inning.
Zach Kalter led off the inning with a single to center and Jeff Brown drew a walk. Mike Goetz followed with a RBI single to left to chase Suchowiecki (1-4). Maunus drove in the final run of the contest off Shane Sveda with a single to right field.
Traverse City had seven hits in the game with Maunus picking up two.
Prior to the game, the Bums signed right-hand pitcher Steve Roberts, a recent graduate of Lafayette College. TC released right-hand pitcher J.T. King (2-5, 6.75 ERA) to make room for Roberts, who had five saves and a 2.22 ERA in 18 appearances for Lafayette.
TC hosts Midwest for two more games at Wuerfel Park.
After the homestand, the Bums have an off-day on Monday. TC plays at River City and Southern Illinois next week before hosting the All-Star Game on July 16.
