Beach Bums rally for win

TC wins series with Lake Erie

FROM STAFF REPORTS

AVON, Ohio -- All nine Traverse City batters collected at least one hit Wednesday night as the Beach Bums beat Frontier League rival Lake Erie 7-4.

The Beach Bums, who pounded out 14 hits in all, won the final two games in the three-game set.

Kevin Reese improved to 3-1. He pitched five innings, surrendering four runs on 10 hits. B.J. Hagen, David Hurst and Jeff Williams combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief. Williams picked up his sixth save. He entered the game with the tying runs on base in the eighth inning. After an error loaded the bases, Williams forced Wayne Bond into an inning-ending double play to thwart the threat.

The Beach Bums rallied from a 4-1 deficit by scoring five runs in the middle three innings. Traverse City snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs in the sixth. Corey Whiting drove in the game-winning run when he doubled home Brad Miller, who led off the inning with a single. Whiting moved to third on a sacrifice and then scored on a fielder's choice.

Whiting, Miller, John Alonso, Kyle Maunus and Mike Victor all had two hits in the game. Alonso and Mike Epping drove in two runs apiece. Alonso doubled in a run in the first and homered in the fifth. Maunus also added a solo shot. His came leading off the fourth.

For the second game in a row, Traverse City turned three double plays in the field.

The Beach Bums (13-011) continue their road trip tonight, facing Washington in the start of a three-game series. Shawn Joy (0-0, 4.15) will get the call for Traverse City while Washington will counter with Brian McCullough (0-0, 3.86).
