Bums drop road trip opener

Lake Erie takes 8-5 decision

AVON, Ohio -- Traverse City's first trip to Lake Erie didn't go as planned Monday.

The Crushers tallied 12 hits and scored late runs for an 8-5 Frontier League win over the Beach Bums.

Lake Erie (12-10) leapt ahead of Traverse City (11-11) in the East Division standings with the win.

The Crushers had three hits each from Gordon Gronkowski and Tim Binkoski while Andrew Davis had a two-run homer in the seventh inning for a 7-5 lead.

Brian Lapin led the Beach Bums, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Mike Epping had two hits, two walks and three runs scored. Lapin brought him home twice.

John Alonso also had two hits, including an RBI single in the third inning.

Jason Kiley started for the Beach Bums and went six innings in a no decision. Ryan Kruszka suffered the loss by giving up two runs on one hit and a walk in the seventh inning.

Lake Erie's Cristobal Mata earned the win while Jaconto Gonell picked up his third save.

The two teams will play again today at 7:05 p.m. Traverse City will send David Nathanson to the mound while Kevin Skogley will get the start for the Crushers.
