Bums ink former All-American 3B

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Beach Bums signed third baseman Kenny Smith.

Smith was selected in the 20th round of the 2007 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers after hitting .390 with 72 runs, 24 doubles, 20 home runs, 84 RBI, and 14 stolen bases for Western Carolina.

He was named a Division 1 second-team All-American, consensus Southern Conference Player of the Year and WCU's Student-Athlete of the Year.

After being drafted by the Rangers, Smith (5-10, 185) he hit .240 with five doubles, two homers, 12 RBI and three steals in 36 games with short season-A Spokane of the Northwest League. He earned a late-season promotion to class-A Clinton of the Midwest League, where he hit .143 in seven games.

With Smith's signing, the Beach Bums have 32 players under contract, including 18 position players (seven infielders, seven outfielders, four catchers).
