Inland Press Association Awards
Record-Eagle staff writer Brian McGillivary won first place honors in the national Inland Press Association's journalism contest. Judges selected McGillivary's series, "Meijer's Secret Plan," first nationally in the Explanatory Reporting category for newspapers with paid circulation between 25,001-75,000.
The series is a compilation of stories from late 2007 and this year that detailed the Grand Rapids-based retail giant's illegal campaign to undermine Acme Township's elected officials during a zoning dispute. Read the entire series here »
Michigan Press Association Awards
Members of Pennsylvania Press Association studied over 3,781 entries submitted by 116 Michigan newspapers when they judged the 2008 Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. Complete results are available online at www.michiganpress.org.
The Record-Eagle competed in Class C, consisting of newspapers with circulation between 12,001-30,000.

This award is presented to the top newspaper in eight circulation classes based on points accumulated (100 for first, 70 for second and 40 for third – points are doubled in the General Excellence contest) in all Editorial contest categories.

Firefighters from Grand Traverse Metro spray water on a backhoe sitting next to a gas line that caught fire shortly after 3 p.m. on Monday. January 8, 2008. An underground gas line ignited while workers boring line for electrical wires were removing pipe on Monday afternoon along the south side of South Airport Road, just east of Racquet Club Drive, causing flames that leapt as high as 30 feet in the air. No one was injured.
