GREILICKVILLE -- Five people remained hospitalized as authorities continue to investigate a two-vehicle crash in Leelanau County.
Robert Nadai, 55, of Royal Oak, allegedly drove through a stop sign on Hoxie Road and into the path of a vehicle occupied by five people heading north on Bugai Road around 1:20 p.m. Saturday, officials said.
Seven people were involved in the crash, and five remained at Munson Medical Center Monday. Nadai's front seat passenger Kathleen Mae Nadai, 60, was in serious condition.
Passengers of the second vehicle, Lola Jane Sieske, 61, and Shirley Ann Baker, 64, both of Ohio, were in fair and serious conditions, respectively. Traverse City resident Claribel Crego Snyder, 91, was in critical condition. Alice Beverly Campeau, 73, of Traverse City, was in serious condition Monday, hospital officials said.
Robert Nadai and the driver of the second vehicle, Thomas Sieske, 59, of Ohio, were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
"Nadai was partly through the intersection and he was actually hit on the passenger's side of his vehicle," Leelanau County Undersheriff Scott Wooters said.
Alice Campeau was riding without a seat belt in the back seat of the vehicle driven by Thomas Sieske and was thrown from the vehicle upon impact, Wooters said.
She was "partially pinned underneath the vehicle and the vehicle had to be lifted to get to her," he said.
Emergency responders also had to pry apart wreckage to remove Snyder, who was riding in the front seat of the same vehicle.
Investigators continued to inspect the vehicles Monday and expect to file criminal charges against Nadai soon, Wooters said.
"A search warrant was served on both vehicles to remove the computer boxes, which will help us determine speed at impact, direction of travel and other information about the vehicles themselves," he said. "Mostly, we are just waiting to hear about the health of the crash victims. Charges will be based on the extent of the injures of the people involved."
