Adding elegance to area kitchens

TRAVERSE CITY -- Angela Goodall wanted to remodel the aged kitchen in her newly purchased vintage home on Union Street, so she drew up plans and designed a fresh new cooking place.

Little did she know the project would lead her to a new career as owner of one of Traverse City's leading one-stop shops for interior project design.

From custom cabinetry to complete design services, since 2003 Kitchen Choreography has helped dozens of home and business owners transform their visions into elegant, functional spaces. The company's 2,300-square-foot showroom is on South Garfield Avenue, near Heavenly Ham.

"We do it all," said Goodall. "From custom cabinetry to countertops, we can design their project and do the installation."

In addition to completing new food prep areas, the company also works with clients to remodel outdated kitchens.

Kitchen Choreography's cabinet lines include Pinnacle, a custom-made product headquartered in Mt. Pleasant. They also partner with the popular Yorktown Silver and Fieldstone brands. In 2006 they were one of the Top 9 Fieldstone dealers in the nation.

Kitchen Choreography's extensive selection of counters includes tops of custom solid-surfaces, quartz, natural stone and custom laminates.

Goodall's kitchen design career began in 1998 when she went to work for Harbor Cabinetry. "The first year was difficult and I even contemplated getting out of the business," recalled Goodall, who grew up in Mio and planned to become a math professor.

With encouragement and help from a couple of construction firms, Goodall persevered through the early days of learning the business. She later worked with Sanderson Woodcraft, eventually taking over the company's retail sales operation that became Kitchen Choreography.

"The business took off right from the start," she said.

Goodall's business has grown steadily, despite slow times in other aspects of the construction business.

"We do a lot of custom homes," she said. "If we do 10 or 12 of them a year, we're in very good shape."

The company also stays busy doing remodeling and home addition projects.

Last year the company posted sales of $1.3 million. Through the first three quarters of this year, Kitchen Choreography sales are already $1.7 million.

"We're very financially healthy," said Goodall. "We're having a record sales year."

In addition to the company's success, Goodall gets special satisfaction out of the people with whom she does business.

"For me, it's the connections that have been made," she said. "Whether it's the customers, the bankers, the construction firms, the architects, I enjoy developing those very good relationships with people."
