Tour de Leelanau set for Saturday

LELAND -- An international field will vie for top honors Saturday in the third annual Tour de Leelanau bike race.

The race, modeled after classic European road races, will feature a purse of $10,100 in the women's and men's divisions.

The 104-mile men's race starts at 1 p.m. in Leland. The 69-mile women's race begins at 2:40 p.m. at the Homestead Resort.

The point-to-point open road courses include varying twists, climbs, and descents as riders travel through several Leelanau County villages before finishing uphill at Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown.

The Tour de Leelanau is sanctioned by USA Cycling. Entries are limited to qualified teams only. All riders must have a valid USPRO or USCF 1, 2, or 3 racing license. Team registration forms are available by calling 922-5926 or by visiting www.tourdeleelanau.com.

Central softball team to receive $1,000

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Central softball team will receive $1,000 today from Holloway USA, a manufacturer of varsity sports wear.

The softball team won the money as part of Holloway's "Cool Cash" contest.

Teams submitted photos of players wearing Holloway sports wear. The company then picked the winners.

Central has warm-up jackets from Holloway. The jackets were then embroidered by Personalize Embroidery of Traverse City. Mary Carboneau of Personalize Embroidery took the photo and submitted the contest application to Holloway. The team learned this summer that it had been selected to receive $1,000. A Holloway official will be at the presentation today.

The photo of the Traverse City Central players in their warm-ups will be featured in Holloway's 2008 catalog.

Boyne's Baic wins soccer award

BOYNE CITY -- The Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association has awarded its annual scholarship to Lindsay Baic of Boyne City.

Baic was a 4.0-student and a four-year starter for the Ramblers. She now attends Adrian College and plays soccer for the Bulldogs.

Youth wing-shooting school Saturday

CEDAR -- The Cedar Rod and Gun Club Educational Foundation will conduct a youth wing-shooting/clay target school on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event, which will feature Bryan Bilinski of Fieldsport, is open to youth ages 12-18 and will include group and individual instruction. Loaner guns will be available free of charge, or participants may bring their own shotguns. The organization recommends participants have a valid hunter safety certificate.

The event is a fund-raiser to benefit the club's Educational Foundation. The donation of $175 is tax-deductible. For registration and more information, call Dan Link at 231-228-6908.

On Sunday, the Cedar Rod and Gun Club will holds its pig roast and auction on the club grounds. Included will be a silent auction along with shooting, archery and fly-fishing demonstrations by club members. Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. when the auction begins. The pig roast dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for kids under 5.

Golden Arrow contest Sunday

SUTTONS BAY -- The Suttons Bay Conservation League's annual Golden Arrow archery contest will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday.

With more than 20 three-dimensional targets, the contest is a way for hunters to brush up on their archery skills before bow season. The contest will be held at the Leon Smith orchard on M-22 south of Suttons Bay. Call Mark Smith at 231-271-5747 for more information.

QDMA meeting set for Sept. 19

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Michigan chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) will hold an informational meeting at Kingsley High School on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The meeting, open to the public, starts at 6 p.m.

There will be three featured speakers -- Bob DuCharme, Great Lakes regional director for the QDMA; Jeff Sturgis of Whitetail Habitat Solutions; and Ed Spinazzola of the mid-Michigan branch of the QDMA and the national board of directors.
