September 06, 2008 12:00 am Cheboygan thwarted a last-minute Gaylord comeback to claim a 28-23 non-conference football win Friday. The Chiefs had taken a 28-9 lead with 11:23 left after quarterback Austin Blaskowski scored on a one-yard sneak. The Blue Devils responded with two touchdowns -- a 13-yard run by Nick Freeman and a 13-yard Freeman to Lucas Wichert pass with 1:33 to go. Gaylord recovered an on-side kick and marched to the Cheboygan 12, but could not convert on two passes into the end zone as time expired. Blaskowski led Cheboygan with 94 yards on 19 carries. In addition to his one-yard score, he scampered 75 yards for another six points. He also had 13-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Brandt. Drew Ingram had a 50-yard scoring run for the Chiefs (2-0). Blaskowski was 6 of 10 through the air for 98 yards. For Gaylord, Freeman completed 27 of 40 passes for 314 passes and two scores. Mike Taubitz had nine catches for 105 yards. Kingsley 45 Jason Leonard earned his first head coaching victory with a 45-0 shellacking of Harrison. Maurice Sims and Dave Zaleski each ran for three touchdowns for the Stags (1-1). Sims racked up 132 yards in 14 carries and Zaleski had 126 in just eight attempts. Kingsley led 20-0 at halftime and wore down the Hornets by gaining 336 yards on the ground. On defense, the Stags limited Harrison to 150 total yards. Defensive end Jared Case had five of the team's 13 tackles for loss. Case led the defense with eight stops, while Justin Mueller and Tom Sedlacek each had an interception. Sedlacek added a 34-yard TD catch from John Nix. Petoskey 21 Petoskey stopped a two-point conversion by Ogemaw Heights with 3:06 remaining to pull out a 21-20 non-conference win. The game was deadlocked at 14 at half. Petoskey took the lead on Mike Suter's 18-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Grant Reed kicked the decisive extra point, his third of the night. Ogemaw Heights scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but missed the two-point conversion from its eight following an offsides call. Boyne City 41 Trever Kruzel rushed for 97 yards and four touchdowns as Boyne City rolled pst Newberry 41-6 in a non-conference contest. Kruzel scored on runs of 15, 2, 4 and 11 yards. Drew Nohel added 73 yards on the ground. He scored from 33 and 4 yards. Charlevoix 54 Michael Heckendorn rushed for 112 yards and a pair of scores as Charlevoix raced to a 54-14 non-conference win over Glen Lake. Heckendorn's touchdown runs came from 28 and 9 yards. John Putman had three touchdowns for the Rayders (1-1) -- a 20-yard run, a five-yard reception and a 26-yard fumble recovery. Josh Wolletz rambled in from 55 yards while Michael Kras took another one in from 21 yards. Quaterback Clayton Mitchell hit Alex Foley for an eight-yard score. For Glen Lake, Joey Czapek carried 16 times for 119 yards. Suttons Bay 13 Nick Porritt gained 145 yards on the ground and scored twice as Suttons Bay edged Kalkaska 13-6 in a non-conference clash. Blake Gruse, who rushed for 74 yards, had a touchdown run for Kalkaska (0-2). Each team had four turnovers. Noah Reyhl led the Norsemen (1-1) with 11 tackles and an interception. Pete Bumgardner added 10 tackles. Layton Korson intercepted two passes. For the Blazers, Alex Miltenberger and Jake Royston had 7.5 tackles. Forest Area 48 Collin Park was a one-man wrecking crew for Forest Area. Park blocked three punts -- including one he recovered for a touchdown -- and had 11 tackles in leading Forest Area to a 48-0 win over Bellaire. Park also caught a TD pass from John Ricketts, who threw two TD passes and returned an interception 55 yards for a TD. A.J. Freeman ran 14 times for 209 yards as the Warriors amassed 355 yards on the ground. Central Lake 41 Jared Danbert accounted for five of Central Lake's six touchdowns in a 41-14 romp over Atlanta. Danbert ran for 181 yards and touchdown runs of 4, 12, 1 and 6 yards. Danbert also scored on a 72-yard punt return for Central Lake (2-0). Travis Rogers hit Nate Peterson with a 55-yard pass to account for the other touchdown by the Trojans. Nolan Howes led Central Lake on defense with 14 tackles. Elk Rapids 40 Elk Rapids blew out Oscoda 40-6 to improve to 2-0. The Elks led 21-0 after the first quarter on touchdowns by Tyler Smith (10-yard run), Alex Bethke (5-yard run) and Jimmy Armstrong (6-yard run). Ryan Forfinski added all three extra points. Wes Phillips scored on a 12-yard pass from Derek Sentieri and Sentieri ran one in from 6 yards out for a 34-0 bulge at halftime. Bethke added a 1-yard plunge in the third quarter for a 40-0 advantage. Charlie Hoch caught six passes for 132 yards, as Sentieri was 8-for-10 for 158 yards. Frankfort 34 Wade Luxford ran for 112 yards and threw for 87 as Frankfort ran to a 34-6 win over Manton. Devin Gokey opened the scoring with two touchdowns -- a 3-yard run and a 19-yard reception -- to get the Panthers off to a quick start. Luxford added a 70-yard TD run and Max Banktson threw a 26-yard TD strike to Andrew Smeltzer on a double pass. Dan Nugent struck on a 6-yard run to round out the scoring. Banktson and Chris Tondu had a team-high 10 tackles each. Jasper Woodcock scored on a 2-yard run for Manton. Grayling 22 Geo Bindschatel scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery to lead Grayling to a 22-8 win over Houghton Lake. Bindschatel added a team-high 12 tackles and a sack to his second-quarter TD. Dustin Russo struck on a 5-yard TD run in the first quarter and Jimmy Osga hit Tyler Hansen on an 81-yard strike in the third. Osga finished 17-for-34 passing for 292 yards. Tyler Steffer hauled in fave catches for 106 yards. Jake Aubrey added 10 tackles on defense. Gaylord St. Mary 48 Arron Sitkiewicz carried 26 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns as Gaylord St. Mary defeated Inland Lakes 48-30 in a Ski Valley game. Quarterback Austin Lawnichak ran for one score and threw for two more. He was 6 of 7 passing for 158 yards. Justin Malczyk rushed for 97 yards and two more scores. Receiver Pete Spyhalski caught five passes for 125 yards and two scores. Onekama 46 Onekama returned two pass interceptions for scores in a 46-6 Mid-State Conference win over Baldwin. Ryan Miller took one of the picks 98 yards for a touchdown while defensive end Joe Kosiboski took the other 60 yards for six. Joerdan Daldos led a balanced Onekama (2-0, 2-0) offense with 83 yards on the ground. He scored on a run and a reception. JV FOOTBALL Saginaw Nouvel 21 Chad Alcorta scored all three Saginaw Nouvel touchdowns in a 21-6 win over Traverse City St. Francis. Will Grombala scored on a 21-yard TD run for the Gladiators (1-1).
