Firefighter Cancer

Chris Slezak pays a visit to Fire Station #1 in Sterling Heights. Slezak has been a firefighter for the city for the past 15 years and is now on disability from the job that he loves. Slezak was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009, which he says he believes was caused by years of being exposed to toxins while battling burned, smoke-filled structures. Under a bill in the Michigan Legislature, full-time firefighters would receive workers compensation for some cancers, like Slezak's, which would be presumed to have occurred on the job.
