LANSING (AP) — Starting Today, Michigan drivers can buy the state’s new specialty license plate that features the Mackinac Bridge and the “Pure Michigan” tourism logo.
The plate, a fancier version than the new standard license plate unveiled earlier in the year, costs $5 more and replaces the Spectacular Peninsulas specialty plate that was first issued in 2007.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said the Mighty Mac is worth signaling out both as a tourist attraction and as an engineering feat. It is the third-longest suspension bridge in the world and has a total length measuring 5 miles.
“It symbolizes Michigan, our ingenuity, our ability,” Johnson said in a phone interview. “As old as it is, it’s still breathtaking.”
The specialty plate being replaced shows the 55-year-old bridge but also includes the state’s outline and a city-and-forest skyline.
“This one, the bridge is bold big and bold,” Johnson said.
No more Spectacular Peninsulas plates will be sold, but motorists can renew them for as long as they wish. There are about 1.2 million in circulation today.
