Michigan Prison Education

Quantrez Sawyer, 33, of Detroit, sentenced in 2011 from five to 10 years for armed robbery, takes notes during during an entrepreneurship class at Macomb Correctional Facility in New Haven, Mich. As Michigan works to graduate more students from higher education institutions, the Department of Corrections is offering college courses to inmates that lead to degrees. The move is aimed at reducing recidivism. The state currently has agreements with Jackson and Montcalm community colleges and is in discussions with three other community colleges, including Oakland.
