TRAVERSE CITY — Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Johnson of Traverse City will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday, May 2, 2013.
They plan to enjoy a private celebration with their family.
In 1952-53, Mr. Johnson was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed at the North Manitou Shoals Light. While on leave, he met Carmella Aiello.
The couple were married on May 2, 1953, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Detroit.
A wedding reception at the Italian Roma Cafe was attended by family and friends.
While raising their family, Mrs. Johnson, a graduate of Wayne State University and a teacher, encouraged her husband to obtain a degree from her alma mater. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson taught school in Detroit, Auburn, Ala., and at Glen Lake Community Schools.
They both are retired.
While vacationing in the Grand Traverse area in 1968, the Johnsons stayed at the Dune Haven Motel on Glen Lake and ultimately purchased it.
They later sold the motel to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The couple have lived in the Grand Traverse area for 34 years.
The Johnsons have three children, Lynn (Alan) Henning of Traverse City, Chris M. Johnson of Loveland, Colo., and Tracy Ann (Jeff) Pratt of Jefferson, Ga.
They also have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
