CEDAR — Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Popa of Cedar celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 15, 2013. They will be joined by all of their children and grandchildren later this summer for a family celebration.
Thomas Popa and Ruth Ann Korson were married on June 15, 1963, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Gills Pier.
Tommy and Ruthie have lived in Cedar for almost their entire 50 years together. They moved to the Popa family farm, just beyond Holy Rosary Church, early in their marriage. Mr. Popa worked for Traverse City Iron Works and then Tower Automotive, while also farming beef and crops, hunting, fishing and singing in the Holy Rosary Church choir. Mrs. Popa was an active parent volunteer at Holy Rosary Catholic School for many years while their five children attended school there. She also was a 4-H leader, did a variety of part-time jobs and now works at Petoskey Pete’s in Glen Arbor, owned by their son Roger and his wife, Bubba.
The couple’s children are Mindy and Steve Scherr of San Juan Bautista, Calif., Brenda and Tim Nicol of Minneapolis, Alan Popa of Valencia, Spain, Marcia Popa of Minneapolis, and Roger and Bubba Popa of Traverse City. They also have eight grandchildren.
