TRAVERSE CITY — Voters likely will return three incumbents to the Grand Traverse County board and a fourth race was too close to call early today.

The board's lone Democrat, Ross Richardson, faced a heavily financed Republican, Dan Lathrop, in District 1. Richardson held a slim lead with two of seven precincts reporting, one each in Traverse City and Peninsula Township.

"It's really, really close," Richardson said. "I may be in trouble."

The Republican incumbents in the other three races defeated two Green Party candidates and one Democrat.

Republican Herb Lemcool captured almost 80 percent of the vote against Josef Connolly of the Green Party to represent most of Garfield Township and a corner of Blair Township. Addison Wheelock Jr. won with about 58 percent of the vote against Democrat Chandra Ross to represent Long Lake Township and the western half of Green Lake Township.

Republican Christine Maxbauer led Green Party candidate Tom Mair in the western half of Traverse City by 10 percentage points. Garfield Township had yet to report its results, but Maxbauer has traditionally done well in the Republican-leaning township.
