2 incumbents retain seats on Leelanau County board

Newcomers Rentenbach and Zemaitis also win

SUTTONS BAY — Two incumbents on the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners won re-election.

Incumbent Republican Tom Van Pelt beat former Commissioner Mary Tonneberger, 916 votes to 740. Van Pelt is the current chair of the commission and promised to work to address the county's unfunded retirement liabilities if re-elected.

Longtime Commissioner Melinda Lautner, who's held the District 7 seat for nearly 18 years, defeated radio producer Karl Dungjen. Lautner won 992 votes to 603 votes.

Republican Karen Zemaitis barely beat Democrat Patricia Soutas-Little in the District 5 race. The Leelanau County clerk reported that Zemaitis tallied 1010 to Soutas-Little's 997.

In the race for District 6 Democrat Carolyn Rentenbach led Republican Robert Hawley, 1,195 votes to Hawley's 981, early Wednesday.
