US Rep. Dave Camp cruises to 11th term

Associated Press

— DETROIT — Republican Dave Camp of Midland has won an 11th term in Congress, beating an underfunded challenger in a race the outcome of which never really was in question.

With 29 percent of precincts reporting, Camp had 66.8 percent of the vote to 29.9 percent for Democrat Jerry Campbell, the 52-year-old supervisor of Roscommon County's Richfield Township.

Camp dominated Campbell in votes and fundraising, bringing in $2.6 million for the election cycle.

The mammoth amount could be explained in part because of the 57-year-old lawyer and former state lawmaker's position as the ranking Republican on the Ways and Means Committee.

Camp is in line to chair the powerful committee if his party takes control of the House.
