Nearly 5.1M cast ballots in Michigan

DETROIT -- The secretary of state's office says nearly 5.1 million Michigan voters took part in the 2008 election.

The unofficial total of 5,095,762 represents just over 68 percent of the state's 7.5 million registered voters.

That's Michigan's largest voter-turnout figure ever, although there was a greater turnout percentage in 1960. Nearly 73 percent of the 3.4 million voters who were registered then cast ballots in that year's election, when Americans elected John F. Kennedy as president.

Nearly 7.2 million Michigan residents were registered to vote in the last presidential election, held in 2004. Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land in Lansing says more than 4.8 million, or over 67 percent, set the voting record that year.
