Elk Rapids, Mesick off to 2-0 beginnings

ELK RAPIDS — Elk Rapids improved to 2-0 with a 28-12 victory over Rudyard.

Elk Rapids scored first on a blocked punt by Carl Steuer. Rudyard blocked the PAT.

Rudyard evened the score on a 16-yard run to end the first quarter.

Charlie Smith added another Elk Rapids touchdown on a 13-yard run. Tyler Smith ran in the two-point conversion to give the Elks a 14-6 lead.

Rudyard returned the kickoff 75 yards, but failed to even the score with the conversion.

Elk Rapids went ahead, 20-12 on a 55-yard run after a fumble recovery by Zac Dreffs.

Levi Martin had the Elks final TD on a 3-yard run.

Mesick 32
Lake City 24

Josh Wright scored three rushing touchdowns and Ben Peltier ran in two for Mesick in a 32-24 win over Lake City.

Wright finished with 150 yards on the ground and Peltier had 120.

Wright also tallied two sacks defensively.

Mesick coach Jason Morrow credited the play of the offensive line as a key to the win.

Cadillac 35
Godwin Heights 6

Cadillac quarterback Kyle Hinkle ran for two touchdowns and threw for one as the Vikings improved to 2-0 with a 35-6 victory over Godwin Heights.

Hinkle scored on runs of 3 and 15 yards and hit Kyle McDonald with a 6-yard scoring strike.

Derrick Liebler added an 11-yard touchdown run and Mike Ahrens a 4-yard run.

Ahrens ran for 71 yards, Liebler 52 and Hinkle, who completed 6 of 7 passes for 45 yards, added 48 yards.

Matt Kanitz led the Cadillac defense with 10 tackles.

Kingsley 24
Harrison 0

Kingsley's special teams outscored Harrison's offense en route to a 24-0 victory.

The Stags (1-1) led 10-0 after the opening quarter, the final points coming when Josh Meeker blocked a punt attempt through the end zone for a safety.

Joe McCrath opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run and A.J. Lawhead added the two-point conversion.

McGrath added a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Kingsley closed out the scoring on a 14-yard pass from Tommy Sedlacek to Brian Bott and another Lawhead conversion run.

Harrison was held to 129 yards in total offense. Rob Kautman and Jeff Jamieson each had eight tackles.

McGrath carried the ball 19 times for 118 yards. Sedlacek hit on 11 of 14 passes for 86 yards.

Manistee 21
Lakeview 0

Jake Kiss did it on offense, and Jason Dontz led the Manistee defense to a 21-0 shutout of Lakeview (0-2).

Kiss threw for 55 yards on 3-for-6 passing and ran 9 times for 43 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Kiss scored all 3 TDs in the first half, as Manistee (1-1) led 14-0 after the first quarter and 21-0 heading into the intermission.

Dontz had 11 tackles and an interception and also ran for 71 yards.

Manton 16
McBain 14

Justin Swinehart rushed for 236 yards on 36 carries to lead Manton past McBain, 16-14.

Swinehart put the Rangers on top with a 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Jordan Woodcock's two-point conversion run made it 8-0.

McBain (0-2) tied the game in the second quarter on Caleb Sluiter's 3-yard TD run and conversion.

Jasper Woodcock hauled in a 12-yard scoring pass from Jordan Woodcock to put Manton (1-1) on top again, and Swinehart provided the winning margin with a two-point conversion run.

McBain scored it's final touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Justin Sluiter to Ethan Sikkema. A conversion run failed.

Swinehart led the Manton defense with 12 tackles, while Brandon Norman added 10 and Tom Skiver nine.

Central Lake 61
Hale 6

Cody Rogers rushed for 166 yards and four touchdowns as Central Lake rolled to a 61-6 win over Hale.

Spencer Hickman, Landon Waller, Nolan Howes and Ryan Dygert also scored on runs. Byron Patton passed to Brent Patton for another touchdown.

Joe Rubingh finished with 96 yards in seven carries and Hickman 78 yards in two carries for the Trojans, who led 48-0 at half.

Brent Patton led the defense with 11 tackles and a sack. Hickman and Zach Light were in on eight tackles.

Suttons Bay 49
Harbor Springs 0

Suttons Bay blanked Harbor Springs, 49-0.

Adam Konieczka led off the scoring for Suttons Bay (2-0) on a 22-yard pass from Jeff Ruthkowski.

Colin Korson returned a punt 56 yards and Cal Forton scored on a 36-yard run to give Suttons Bay a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jordan Peplinski scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of 35 and 14 yards.

Forton broke away on a 53-yarder to score another TD in the third quarter and Andrew Bumgardner had the final touchdown on a 7-yard run.

Forton connected on six PATs and Anthony Stewart scored one.

Suttons Bay finished with 352 yards rushing. Forton led with 96.

Harbor Springs fell to 0-2.

Manton 16
McBain 14

Grayling 21

Houghton Lake handed Grayling a 31-21 loss.

Ryan Cooper and Tim VanNuck had one rushing touchdown each for Grayling and Isaac VanNuck scored on a 22-yard pass from Jeff Bancroft.

Cooper finished with 127 yards rushing.

Nick Parkinson led the Grayling defense with 10 tackles.

Roscommon 19
Kalkaska 13

Kalkaska was unable to recover from a 19-point third quarter deficit, falling to Roscommon, 19-13.

Roscommon scored in each of the first three quarters, but Kalkaska (1-1) had the only two TDs in the fourth.

Jake Heller connected with Steve Bonofiglio on a 31-yard pass for the Blazers' first touchdown and Mike Cleggett scored on a 11-yard run.

Bonofiglio led the defense with 19 tackles. Heller added 13 and William Beaver had eight.

Saginaw Nouvel JV 14
TC St. Francis JV 0

Zach Garner (4 yards) and Nick Dabro (32 yards) had touchdown runs as the Saginaw Nouvel JVs blanked TC St. Francis, 14-0.

Defensive standouts for the Glads (1-1) were Max Bullough, Taylor Hennrick and Sean Paquet.
