10/23/2006Letters to the EditorAt Issue: ElectionsWhere's the interest?DeVos keeps accusing Granholm for what he says hasn't happened yet. Facts: Granholm and other Democrats have tried many times to do a lobbying ban, and get help for small business, education and health care. These things haven't happened because the Republican Legislature voted them down. Facts: The reason there have been no tax cuts is that the Legislature only wants tax cuts for rich folks. There has been some funding for education, but no "learning loans" because "learning loans" are another name for the private school voucher system DeVos wants in place. Where's the interest in improving public schools? Jeff Mort Vote 'em outThese lower gas prices are just a way to get votes to re-elect people now holding office Democrats and Republicans both! I say vote every one of those people out who sat on their duffs and let these oil companies rip us off. If we don't we are going to pay $4 per gallon to make up for what we are paying now. Don't be fooled, people. Vote 'em out now, every last one of them. Let your voice be heard. Don't let these good old boys back in office. Vote! Pat Crone Protect rural vitalityAgriculture and tourism are foundations of Leelanau County's economy. When we lose farmland, we lose tourists, jobs, and put our quality of life at risk. In 2002, 60 percent of Leelanau farmers said they would consider enrolling in a program to permanently protect their working farms from development. Several have applied and been approved but not one acre of farmland has been protected because there is no funding. The Farmland Preservation Program will provide local funds to generate additional state, federal and foundation funds to protect our working farms. Vote "yes" on Farmland Preservation to protect Leelanau County's rural vitality. Carol Hilton
